Editing and Encoding

The tools included here enable you to work with the raw audio material that you have collected or created. Cut, copy, paste clips, use filters to clean up noise and much more.

There are some extremely good FOSS audio editing tools available. The main focus here is Audacity, which works on Linux, Windows and Mac.

Encoding - preparing your audio for distribution, converting various formats appropriate for the desired medium of distribution (mp3, ogg etc.) most often happens in your editing programme however we have also included below some additional tools for transcoding your audio to different formats/codecs and compressions.

Editing

Audacity is a free, easy-to-use audio editor and recorder for Windows, Mac OS X, GNU/Linux, and other operating systems.
You can use Audacity to:

* Record live audio.
* Convert tapes and records into digital recordings or CDs.
* Edit sound files in Ogg Vorbis, MP3, and WAV.
* Cut, copy, splice, and mix sounds together.
* Change the speed or pitch of a recording.

Encoding

In addition to being up to encode/transcode your audio in Audacity and and Rezound you can also use the following programmes.

Max is an application for creating high-quality audio files in various formats, from CDs or files.

Once the audio is extracted, Max allows you to save the audio in over 20 compressed and uncompressed formats including MP3, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC, AAC, Apple Lossless, Monkey's Audio, WavPack, Speex, AIFF, and WAVE. You can also convert audio between formats using Max.
