Distributing your audio on the internet is a great way to reach thousands of people any where in the world with very little effort and cost. You no longer need a massive transmitter to distribute your productions or recieve them from almost anywhere. You can use streaming - allowing users to listen like radio, podcasting - listen while they download or just download and save the audio on their computers, content manangement systems with audio capabilities allowing you to own, host or manage audio content.
Audio online is also very easy to feed back into your local community radio station, creating a great complimentary distribution mechanism.
